Chagrin River, East Bank, Fairmount and River Roads

As though the landscape itself is cantilevered over the Chagrin River, an impenetrable deciduous forest ascends several hundred feet up the escarpment. Mixed sporadically among the giant red oaks, maples, ash and an occasional conifer stand the ancient American sycamores, virtually unseen until November when the cloak of leaves fall and colors the forest floor. Then, after late autumn rains blacken trunks of neighboring trees, sycamores stand in relief, splotched and bone white, many over 100', here before the valley was settled in the early 19th century.
