ABOUT
“C. Geoffrey Baker’s landscapes of Northeastern Ohio and Northwestern Michigan expand our understanding of what Henri Cartier-Bresson called his quest for “the decisive moment.” … “Baker’s is a decidedly American world, continuous with the “sublime” in the 19th century vistas of Bierstadt and Church, the chastened humility of Thoreau and Melville, the transcendentalism of Emerson. He belongs to that American tradition of businessmen / artists exemplified by the composer Charles Ives and the poet Wallace Stevens.”
—Charles Michener, former Senior Editor at The New Yorker and Senior Editor for Cultural Affairs at Newsweek
ARTIST STATEMENT
With the introduction of this website, Art of the Landscape, a new chapter opens, one dedicated not only to imagery but personal observation, stories, and musings conveyed through written essays and descriptive narratives. Its creation is to further differentiate my work as a photographic artist for over 60 years and as an expository prose writer throughout my adult life. Through the juxtaposition of these disciplines, the hope is to augment, better inform, and enhance the viewer’s experience.
My other objective for this site is to replace my former business, Baker Fine Art Photography, with a means to view and purchase collectible, limited-edition prints, ones previously sold through my wife Kate’s gallery, Still Point Gallery and Boutique. It was through her vision, care, and management over 16 successful years that Still Point established itself as a local icon and beloved institution until her retirement in 2024. And it was Kate’s personal aesthetic and creativity that brought the seductive beauty and tranquility that drew scores each day. As the primary beneficiary of her original vision for a gallery, I’ve held a number of shows at Still Point as well as solo exhibitions at other galleries, major art museums, and cultural institutions. However, with Kate’s retirement and the closure of the gallery, I am dedicating considerably more to being in the field and relying on this new website to display and market my limited edition prints.
* A special note of deep appreciation and recognition must go to Merry Bilgere, a print and online production professional who developed this website. Her creative sensibilities, patience and attention to detail have culminated in an outstanding work. To the extent grammatical, punctuation or errors of any other nature appear here, I would be the offending party and fully accept responsibility.
BIOGRAPHY
“C. Geoff Baker’s magnetic words and images unite to offer fresh, beguiling vistas of the familiar world. His role as the artist is to recover, to rediscover, what we understood so well as children: the strange, the beautiful, the miraculous. Baker’s language and vision, like petroglyphs, are records of the artist’s enduring struggle to give shape and meaning to the mystery of being human on our lovely, imperiled little planet.”
—poet George Bilgere
C. Geoff Baker is a resident of Northeast Ohio, dividing much of his time between photographing northeast Ohio’s landscapes as well as those of northwestern Michigan. Since 1970 he has spent several weeks each year visiting Lake Michigan’s shores, its dunes, farms, and woodlands. Over the course of these years, and a demanding business career, he has been a consistent award-winning photographer. It was not until 2006 that he scaled back his corporate career and started Baker Fine Art Photography dedicated to fine art landscape photography.
His carefully crafted landscape photographs of northeast Ohio and northwestern Michigan have been purchased and prized by collectors, institutions, and individuals, not only in Ohio and Michigan, but throughout the country. His exhibit at the Butler museum explored the paradoxical dimension of “stillness” in photography. He has authored three books including The Way Home, a limited edition of 100 that sold out shortly after release, His most recent, …There the dance is, is a limited edition of 150 copies featuring over 50 landscapes images with accompanying essays.
Geoff has over forty years of corporate and entrepreneurial experience, having managed Republic Steel Corporation’s principal corporate product group, and subsequently directing the buyout, technology transfer, and product commercialization of BP America’s Cast Alloy Parts division where he served as CEO. He has led two manufacturing startups as CEO and two turnarounds. His international experience includes the oversight as the European Chairman and management of an American owned, German GmbH manufacturing company and a Belgium SRL/BV. He has served on for-profit and not-for-profit boards and Executive Committees, including, Fieldstone Farm, one of the nation’s largest and most renowned therapeutic equine centers.
His work has been purchased for the private collections of the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, major law firms, national design firms, and institutional and individual collectors. In 2022 the Cleveland Museum of Art contracted to sell Geoff’s images for a line of apparel through its Museum Store.
