Seven miles east of the small town of Pentwater, where Monroe Road dead-ends into Rural 144 as it transitions from pavement to hard-pack sand; here, where Oceana County’s history began, here where jack pines dot the land and a few cornfields and orchards still cling to deep, round ridged dunes; here, 10,000 years ago an ice age created the landscape.

These distant acres, spillovers, absent farmhouses mostly, where the land rises and falls in ancient rhythms and folks tend crops less frequently, a stranger might speculate on corn rows still standing. It might be that the time didn’t warrant the harvest, or that air drying the crop was less costly, or that a stand of corn could nourish wildlife through winter, or simply that a crow found it all beautiful to behold.
