Equinox, Empyrean Fire

An iconic image of the skies of northern Michigan as autumn weather systems sweep in.

The chaos of different cloud types adds to Lake Michigan’s classic September storms. Marking the autumnal equinox, this one moved directly across the lake from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to Pentwater, Michigan, a sixty-mile, four-hour ferry ride from the site of this image.

Contributing to the drama and adding another dimension to the evening was the position of the sun twenty minutes before setting.
