Driving east on Monroe Road out of Pentwater, Michigan, beyond the highway (I-31), past Oceana Drive, another three miles passing Slocum's nursery to the north, Alvesteffer farm another mile to the south with its peach orchards and strawberry fields forever, on through glorious, gently rolling farms another three or four miles until pavement ends abruptly at N. 144 Avenue. Here the small community of Walkerville (267 souls) exists on the map but defies comprehension as no homes or commercial establishments are to be seen.

The intrepid can continue east beyond the one-way stop sign onto semi-hard pack sand, over a couple of dunes and up a third where one must accept the inevitable "end of the road." Sugar maple and cherry form a natural gateway to the woods beyond ... no more road ... only game trails and the beauty the last ice age continues to confer on this land 10,000 years later.
