Rainy Night, Calle Matamoros
This image is of my wife, Kate, as she walked down Matamoros, a small side street, alleyway really, on this little island off the coast of the Yucatan. As we took this dark, little-traveled shortcut, the name Matamoros (kill the Moors) struck me as a bit ominous.
A steady rain moved through that evening, lowering the oppressive heat, creating a strange new sense of place, as though the vibrant Mexican culture of joyous sound and bright colors had given over to angular shadows and reflections. However, the lights of Hidalgo Boulevard, a long tourist walkway, can be seen in the distance welcoming us back to a culture we seemed to have left briefly.
